Summer is one of the best times of the year. The weather is beautiful and there’s nothing more exciting than getting outside and having some fun in the sun! However, for those who like to stay fit year round, summer isn’t all fun. Unfortunately, there’s really no other way to put it – exercising in hot, humid, 90-degree weather can be pretty miserable. Running, riding a bike or even taking your dog for a walk can seem impossible when you’re dripping with sweat from the heat and humidity. Here are some tips to survive this summer while keeping your body happy and healthy!
Protect Your Skin
Outdoor workouts are a great way to stay fit and enjoy the weather, but during the summer sunburns and skin damage is always at risk during the warm summer months. Try to find an oil-free formula that won’t make your body feel overheated, with an SPF of 15 or higher. If you need additional protection, a hat with a wide brim can help, too!
Stay Hydrated
Hydration is a key to having a successful workout routine! During any month of the year, staying hydrated is extremely important, especially when fighting through heat and humidity this summer. Make sure to drink water before, during and after your workout. If completing a high-intensity workout, try switching to a sports drink with more electrolytes.
Switch It Up
Instead of over exhausting your body, switch up your workout! You can change your schedule based on temperatures outside, or even split up your workouts. There’s no shame in doing half of your workout in the morning, and the other half that afternoon or evening. It’s always better to stay healthy and comfortable. Not only will it be easier on your body, but may even make you feel better and stronger the second go around!
Dress Lightly
While working out, everyone is guilty of wanting to look their best. However, cotton can actually make your body work harder. As cute as cotton can be, it doesn’t wick away moisture very well. It’s important to wear breathable fabric, and it’s even better if you can find a wicking fabric to wear! These can be a lifesaver when working out in the hot heat!
Know When To Call It Quits
In addition to caring for your skin and staying hydrated, listening to your body is incredibly important! Keep an eye on your heart rate, if it’s rising too high try to take it slow or maybe take a break. If you feel weak, experience muscle cramps, or start to feel dizzy, take a break and breathe for a few minutes. Keep an eye on your temperature and make sure you don’t underestimate the possibility of heat exhaustion!
Following these quick tips should make your perfect summer workout a walk in the park. Hopefully, these tips can help your build your summer workout routine AND stick to it!
