Let’s get your kitchen organized before the big cooking season of the holidays begins! Are your storage containers spilling out of your kitchen cabinets? Have you matched them up lately? I pretend it’s a dating game you have to match the right bottom (guy…need I say more?!?) to the perfect lid (woman). It’s time to play…spread them all out on the counters and get started matching!
With all of the mismatched storage containers that you will obviously have left, look on the bottom of each one to see if it has a recycle symbol so you can recycle it. Even better, could you use them to hold anything; bathroom items, little toys, dry mixes in the pantry…so many ideas!! If not throw away anything that is not recyclable or of use to you.
To store these containers can sometimes be tricky! Too many odd shaped containers will not allow you to maximize your cabinet space. I personally love my square containers! Why you ask? Round containers leave spaces on the sides and you can certainly store more square containers in cabinets, freezer shelves, and refrigerator shelves than those round ones. They are so easy to stack on top of each other. When space is a commodity, as it is for most of us, every square inch needs to be utilized!
If you absolutely prefer round storage containers, stack them together in a cabinet, (and the same goes for the square containers). Now as for the lids, I like to keep the lids close by their bottoms. Sometimes I put all the lids in a drawer above the storage container cabinet. Other times I will put all my square lids in a large square container to keep them together. Do the same for the round lids as well (into a large round container).
If you need to replace some of your storage containers in the future, do decide which shape you like best. (And don’t forget that it is much easier to stack the square containers.) Please remember my other advice…to keep all of the lids together! Now you are ready to begin cooking for family and friends…and who doesn’t like to receive a home cooked item in a great storage container?
