The summer is a time for taking adventures or a vacation with the family and of course, relaxing! Whether you travel for the summer, stay at the beach, rent – summer activities are always a must! Don’t depend on the weather and then be stuck as a couch potato if it rains. I spend my summers at Cape Cod, MA where the summer activities and fun never ends! If you have a chance to rent or visit, I have some recommendations for you. Even if you are vacationing somewhere else, look for similar adventures near you! 10 necessities to fulfill your summer vacation.
1. Visit the Island
Take the ferry to Martha’s Vineyard. There are so many activities to do on the Vineyard, and it is full of cute summery towns. My favorite spots are Edgartown, Oak Bluffs, and Gingerbread house community. Martha’s Vineyard also holds many beautiful beaches. To travel the island, you can rent a moped, ride bikes or take a bus.
2. Mini Golf
Mini Golf is the perfect summer activity that the kids will definitely love. It involves some competitiveness and a whole lot of fun! There are numerous mini golf places all down the Cape, but my favorite is located in South Yarmouth – Pirate’s Cove.
Sick of sitting in a dark cold theatre? Pack the car, bring your blankets and watch a movie under the stars at the Wellfleet drive-in! Drive-ins are so fun and they are definitely a must for the summer.
4. Bike Ride
Bike Rides are a great way to get exercise without knowing it! Take the family to a bike trail and set out 2 hours of the day. Even make a destination out of it, for example, reward the kids with ice cream after!
5. Board Games
We tend to forget that the weather may not always be in our favor. If you are renting a summer house, or even visiting others, don’t forget to bring board games! My favorite games to play in the cape with family friends are Things, Apples to Apples and Charades!
6. Watch a Sunset or Sunrise
Last summer, I woke up at 5am to watch the sunrise, and it was one of the most fun experiences I had! Take a blanket, walk to the beach and just relax and enjoy the sun.
7. Make a sand castle
Don’t forget to pack your pale and shovel when going to the beach! Kids love making sand castles, and you will too- incorporate whatever you find on the beach, shells, sea glass, seaweed, and design your own!
8. Go Fishing
Set a morning where you will wake up and start your day by fishing! This will force you and the kids to start your day early, and you may even catch dinner. Don’t forget to bring the camera (in a waterproof bag) for cute pictures with your catches!
9. Have a barbecue
Heat up your grill for hot dogs and burgers! The kids will be craving their favorite summer meal- add baked beans, fruit, and salad. Or invite family friends and have them bring a pasta salad or appetizers! Summer cook-outs are my favorite thing to do in the Cape.
10. Go out to Ice Cream
You can find a Smitty’s anywhere on the cape- don’t miss out, it is the best ice cream you will ever taste! Taking your kids to ice cream is something they will definitely appreciate you for.
