You try to teach your children everything that they need to be responsible, healthy adults, but sometimes you feel like they’re missing the point. Maybe they’re disrespectful, maybe they’re irresponsible, or maybe they’re just lazy. Whatever the case, they don’t seem to be getting it. Here are three stories that every child should be told; three lessons that will affect how they see the world as adults.
- The Tortoise and the Hare – The lesson to be learned from this classic story is simple, but important. No matter how talented you are, or how fast, or how strong, you won’t succeed without perseverance. The Hare was the fastest, but the tortoise won because he kept going. He didn’t get distracted. He didn’t take breaks. No matter how hard it was, he persisted. That’s an important lesson for children. Life will get hard. They have to learn to not give up.
- The Boy Who Cried Wolf – Respect is the issue here. The boy did not respect the other people, and he paid for that disrespect with his life. This story has a dual lesson- don’t lie and don’t be disrespectful. Everyone needs someone sometime. If you don’t treat people right, they won’t be there when you really need them. Children need to be reminded that everyone is not their parent- they won’t love them unconditionally. If they want to keep friends, they will have to respect others.
- The Ant and the Grasshopper – Again, here is a lesson of suffering because of irresponsibility. The grasshopper was lazy and wanted to play all the time. Children need to understand that there is a time to work and a time to play. Life cannot be an endless play-time. If they learn that early, it will be much easier for them as they grow older.
The stories are simple and ancient, yet they are still told today. Why is that? It’s because they’re still true today. Every lesson in these stories applies to modern life. Every lesson is a necessary one for children to learn. These stories provide an easy, visual way to teach these lessons, but the value they have cannot be measured.
