As soon as the clock turns 12 on January 1st, half of our friends and families vow to stick to a healthy diet this year. This year they’ll only eat organic, non-processed, healthy foods and to finally say goodbye to the sugar, carbs, and starches. However, when we decide to just go full-blast healthy, it can be difficult to stick with it for the entire year. The best way to adhere to a healthy diet is to start with small goals, which eventually lead to accomplishing bigger goals overall. Here are some tips to getting started on a healthy diet in 2018!
Breakfast is The Most Important Meal of The Day
You may be getting tired of hearing breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but seriously, it is. Breakfast gets your brain fired up in the morning and gets you energized for the day! Anything from a cup of yogurts to a protein filled plate is great for your first meal of the day.
Hydration is Key
Hydration is a large part of a healthy diet. When your body is dehydrated, it can actually hold a larger percentage of your weight as water weight to keep your hydration levels steady. Not only that, but drinking water before meals can actually make you feel full faster. Water is a huge part of your diet! Try drinking half of your body weight in ounces, but make sure to spread it out evenly throughout the day.
No More Snacking
This is a big one. Snacking, in general, isn’t great for your body, especially when you’re trying to be healthier. We often snack while watching TV and end up eating a whole bag of chips in less than 30 minutes! Most of the time we end up eating and can’t find a stopping point unless an episode ends. If you really need something to snack on, try gum or a healthy option.
Smaller Portions
There are studies that show we eat most of what’s on our plate, whether we’re that hungry or not. So instead of a huge dinner plate, try out a smaller plate to eat your meals on. Not only will this lower your portion sizes, it will also help you to feel fuller and maybe skip out on a late night snack.
List it Out
When it comes to eating healthier, what you buy for the week is incredibly important! When you go shopping make sure you have a well-thought-out list to help sustain you for the week. Instead of rolling through aisles go in knowing what you need. Not only will you leave with healthier options, you’ll also be able to make a quicker trip!
Instead of trying to force yourself to quit cold turkey, try to set some ground rules. Eating smaller portions, cutting out the snacking, and be more strategic about your meals throughout the week. And that’s all it takes! You may not see a dramatic difference immediately, but along with an exercise routine, you’ll finish 2018 healthy and happy. What are some of your best healthy diet tips?
