Family flights are always tough, whether you’ve got young kiddos tagging along or not. However, when you have a 10+ hour long drive, sometimes family flights aren’t avoidable. That doesn’t mean your kiddos make it easy on you, though! Between packing, getting them out of the house on time, going through security, and finally making it through the plane ride – traveling can be tough. With summer trips being in full spring, it’s important to plan ahead. To make family flights as enjoyable as possible, here are 5 tips for keeping the whole family sane.
1. Here’s The Drill
Airplanes are a mystery to young kids – and even some adults. Before heading to the airport, try to talk to them about what to expect. ESPECIALLY if it’s their first time on a plane or if they don’t remember the last time! Definitely, don’t forget to mention that you won’t be able to exit the airplane until landing. When boarded, ask if you may introduce them to the pilots as a fun activity and a way for them to understand how flying works! It’s a great way to distract them being scared.
2. Packing the RIGHT Way
Fill up your kid’s bag with some of their favorite snacks and toys to use while on the plane. Also, pack a change of clothes for them, just in case. It is better to be prepared than stressed out when your kid spills something on their shirt at the very beginning of a five-hour flight. Try to avoid bringing a kid’s roller bag, even if they promise they will hold on to it the entire time. Chances are you’ll end up having to drag it through the terminals in addition to your own bag when your kid decides they are tired or are having trouble steering. Instead, opt for a backpack that is small enough for your child to carry on their back.
During takeoff and landing, it’s super common for our ears to pop and sometimes, it’s painful. It’s even more common for kiddos to deal with and it can be a really stressful situation for everyone involved. To prevent a chaotic situation, give them some gum to chew. When I was younger, I used to love traveling because it means I get to chew some gum! You might prevent some tears and discomfort with a simple piece of gum!
I’m a firm believer in limiting screen time, but sometimes, it’s absolutely necessary. Plane rides are definitely one of those times! Keeping them entertained can be as simple as bringing an iPad with games, movies, or just doodle on during the flight. Make sure you charge it before you leave for the airport so you don’t have any issues!
Airplane food is expensive! Usually, they’re small, over-priced meals that won’t even fill anyone up. In order to avoid your kiddos begging to buy a meal, pack some of their favorite snacks at home. You can even choose healthier alternatives than the chips and cookies that airlines offer if you so choose.
Most importantly remember, kids are kids. The flight may not go as well as you had hoped. Your kiddos may make you feel like the most stressed-out parent in the world. Luckily, the people you’re flying with hopefully understand. What are some of your favorite tips for family flights? Leave your comments below!
