Summer is quickly drawing to a close but that doesn’t mean the sun isn’t shining anymore. The end of summer brings trips to the beach, barbeques, and long days of sitting in the sun. Summer fun is the best kind of fun but sunburns are no fun at all! Luckily, sunburns can be easily avoided and there are tons of helpful tips to get you through the summer heat. Keep the fun going with these simple tips to guard against sunburns.
First things first – sunscreen! Every time you’re planning on going outside you needs to stock up on some sunscreen. Try using at least an SPF 15, especially on your face or other sensitive areas. The longer you’re planning on being outside, the higher your SPF needs to be. Make sure to re-apply when getting out of the water!
Another great option is to seek out some shade! Whether you have sensitive skin or not, seeking out some shade is a great way to avoid a sunburn. The most crucial hours to find shade is between the hours of 10 AM to 4 PM when the sun is the strongest. If you’re outside around that time, find a shady spot or use a sun umbrella to cover yourself from the sun. Try to plan outdoor activities that start before 10 or after 4 to spend the least amount of time in such harsh sunlight.
If possible, keep your skin covered up with clothes, hats, and sunglasses. Opt for bright colored clothing that is thick so as to keep UV rays away. Hats are perfect for protecting your scalp, face and the back of the neck, which are all sensitive areas to the sun.
Look Out For Changes
Make sure to monitor your skin for any changing moles or bumps. These can be signs of skin cancer and should be checked right away as a precautionary measure. If you notice a skin growth changing color, size, texture or has an irregular border, be sure to head to your dermatologist and get it looked at.
With that being said about changes in your skin, it is beneficial to get a yearly exam just in case. If you spend a lot of time in the sun over summer, schedule an appointment for the end of summer or early fall.
Just because the sun is in full force doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy some fun in the sun! Prepare against the summer sun by stocking up on sunscreen and other cover-ups and get ready to have a great summer! What are your favorite tips for guarding against sunburns? Leave your comments below!
