Being a parent changes your life in a split second. Our kiddos become the centers of our lives and there’s no doubt we love every minute of it, but it’s important to make time for ourselves, too. A great way to invest some time in yourself is by setting aside some time to go enjoy a nice dinner, movie or walk in the park with your significant other. Making plans with kiddos is anything but easy, but we’ve got some tips to set you up for a wonderful date night!
Decide on a Date
First things first, set aside a time for you and your significant other to go out and have some fun! You can pick a day of the week or a specific day. I recommend picking a day out of the week that is usually flexible or when you aren’t as busy. That way you can make it a normal thing and not have to worry about scheduling conflicts or putting it off. Either way, make sure you pick a date and stick to it unless something really really important comes up last minute.
Decide Whos Planning
Next, pick out who gets to make all the big decisions! This can be a fun way for both of you to make the other feel special and a little extra love. You can decide on monthly date nights and alternate planning or even plan date nights at home. If you both want to have a part of the planning, each person can plan different activities for the evening. For example, one person can buy dinner, one person can make dinner, and one person can take care of dessert, the other gets to pick out the movie! Have fun with it and really try to make your night special.
Hire a Babysitter
As soon as you have details settled, make sure your kiddos are in good hands. You can call a relative, a family-friend or hire a great babysitter you trust. If you can, ask them to come early so you can get ready free of any interruptions or distractions.
I know how silly this sounds, but as parents, sometimes we forget we’re people, too. If you guys are tired of talking about science projects or soccer games, write out a list of topics that are off the table. There’s no shame in talking about things we love but it’s important to make sure you share other parts of your lives, too! By writing a list and talking about it beforehand, you’re set to have a stress-free date!
No matter what you decided to do, take some time for yourself and get ready for date night! Even if you’re sitting at home watching a movie, it’s always nice to take some time for yourself and wear something you can’t wear every day. Between me and you, getting ready to go out is one of my favorite parts of the whole thing! I love listening to some of my favorite songs and taking my time to get ready.
Turn off your Cell Phone
Last but not least, this is important. I know our phones are the centers of our lives but if you can, turn your phone off and enjoy each others company. With kiddos sometimes this isn’t an option, but you can always put your phone on do not disturb so you’ll only be notified if it’s an emergency. It may seem difficult at first but it’s absolutely worth it!
I’ve always believed you should keep dating your husband or wife, even after you get married. It’s a great way to keep getting to know your partner and letting each other know you’re important to one another. However, you decide to get date night ready, enjoy your time away and try not to focus on anything other than the person you’re with. What are some of your favorite date night tips?
