Spring cleaning does not have to be a chore! There are ways to make cleaning a little more manageable and kid-friendly.
It is important for children to learn to have responsibility around the house, but this sense of ownership does not always come overnight. Use these ideas to begin to instill a sense of excitement in your kids in a gradual and rewarding way.

Start with a Chore Chart for the whole family. You can really get creative with this – assign certain chores for certain days for each family member. Reward everyone’s hard work and create camaraderie by going out for pizza, having game night, or doing another fun family activity if each family member has finished their work.

Cleaning for Toddlers – Even the little ones in your home can participate. Keep the jobs for your little helper short and sweet – something they can accomplish under ten minutes so they can finish their tasks before getting bored, distracted, or tired. Some great things for younger children to do or help with are: making the bed, putting away toys/clothes, dusting, setting the table.

Cleaning for Elementary Age Children : By this age, most children can do all of the toddler chores by themselves, without help. Add some new chores for them to help mom and dad with like sorting the laundry, putting away groceries, and keeping their room

Cleaning for Preteens : Once your children reach an older age, you can be a lot more hands-off with their responsibilities. If they have younger siblings, they can even begin to be their big-kid helper. New responsibilities for kids that are a little older could include any of the above mentioned chores (without oversight) and things like folding laundry, yard work and cleaning the cars.

Whatever the age of your children, no matter how big the task, remember to have fun. Encourage joy in taking care of the home that you live in and whenever possible, do the work together. Take the opportunity to blast some music and get things done.
Happy Spring Cleaning!
