Franchise Location: Just Between Friends, Middletown & Dover, DE
How did you get started with JBF?
In the spring of 2013 My Dad saw JBF on the Today show and called me right away. He told me about it and I thought about it and said no. But I could not get it out of my mind, So I proceeded to research JBF and spoke with my Husband and Dad about it. In the end we felt that JBF would be a good fit.
How long have you owned your franchise?
We just completed our first year. This year, we decided to run 4 events in our territory. So we will have two in each city (Middletown, Spring and Fall and Dover, Spring and Fall)
What is the most rewarding part of the business?
I had always wanted to help the community on a large scale. However, I was unprepared for how emotional I would get when the charity told me that we had helped many homeless children in the area. Homeless children? They are getting these toys and clothes that they would not have had if we had not done these events. That is payment enough for all the hours we put in, the blood sweat and tears, the long nights. I wish I could give them homes, but we can start little by little to get them basic items that they need. Hopefully we can do more in the future. This is just the beginning.
How do you balance family and friends with being a successful business owner?
My Husband and three sons are a big part of JBF. My Husband is a crucial part in our business. He helps with all the heavy lifting, transportation, set up and any issues that arise. My sons have also helped me even at their young ages (4, 3 and 5 weeks) . They have handed out passes, helped me hang up clothes and help me test toys to make sure they are working. So in a sense we have embraced that JBF is a part of our life. As it gets closer to the sale we try to make sure we are giving them everything they need and carve out time to do special activities even when we get busy.
When did you consider yourself a success as a JBF Franchisee?
When I found out that we donated over $16,000 in children’s items to our local families in 2014.
With Social Media playing an important part in how we connect and communicate, in what way do you use Faceook, Twitter, LinkedIn to promote your business?
I use Facebook everyday to talk to my JBF families. I have lots of giveaways and I use social media as a classroom more so than a networking tool. There are so many opportunities to get in front of people that wouldn’t normally see print ads or magazines, bookmarks.
What have been the biggest challenges or obstacles you’ve faced as a JBF Franchise owner and how were you able to overcome them?
I am still trying to figure out how all the accounting works and getting my books in order. That I believe happens to be the most important part of the business and I spend a lot of time on trying to find discounts on items I need for the sale.
From securing funding to writing a business plan, managing employees, and operating the day-to-day aspects of the sale, running a business takes time and commitment. How did you learn the ins and outs of owning and operating a small business?
Hands down….. Other JBF owners!
What advice would you give someone considering a JBF Franchise?
DO IT! But understand that while the money might take a while to arrive, you will be paid back immediately in good karma, friendship and the amazing feeling of helping hundreds of families in your area.
