If you have a sweet tooth, giving up dessert might feel like your worst nightmare. But I have good news for you, choosing healthier desserts doesn’t mean you have to give up desserts entirely. With a few adjustments to your normal favorites, you can make healthier decisions that are better for you but still taste delicious. Here are our top 5 tips for choosing healthier desserts!
Know What to Avoid
If you don’t want to go crazy overboard with limiting yourself, look out for saturated fats and sugars. Saturated fats are one of the fats are more likely to be absorbed as fats. Sugars wreak havoc on your bodies in multiple different ways but they can skyrocket your blood sugar levels and increase your risk for diabetes, heart disease, etc.
Focus on Fruits
Fruits are natures candy, right? Yep! If possible, try to substitute candy, ice cream, or baked goods for fruit! Some of the sweetest are mangos, pomegranates, and pears. Before you know it, you’ll be reaching for fruit instead of ice cream and cookies.
If you love to enjoy baked goods, you can easily swap out some ingredients to make healthier choices! Ingredients you want to avoid are eggs, milk, butter, and sugar. These ingredients really pile on the saturated fats! There are tons of recipes you can find that have healthier-alternatives for these ingredients.
Try Vegan Recipes
If you can, remove all animal products from your recipes. This will remove those icky saturated fats and you can find tons of pre-made desserts that require zero guesswork! Some of my favorite vegan desserts are donuts, brownies, and cakes!
Eat In Moderation
Okay, we’ve all been there. Maybe chocolate chip cookies are your absolute favorite snack EVER and you don’t think coconut flour or agave sugar will cut it. No matter how dangerous saturated fats and sugars are, it’s okay to eat them every once in a while. There’s nothing wrong with splurging every once in a while but make sure to set limits for yourself that align with your health goals.
Making healthier choices isn’t as difficult as it seems. You don’t have to have chia seeds and acai with every meal but with a few simple adjustments, you’re on your way to a happier and healthier lifestyle. What are some of your favorite alternative desserts? Let us know in the comments below!
