Everyone loves an on-the-go snack to keep for the car, take to the beach, for a long bike ride or to snack on the plane. Trail mix is a very popular snack, and appears to be healthy- or healthier than alternate chips or cookies. But, be careful because often times, generic trail mixes can be unhealthy and full of sugar- particularly in the dried fruits that are in most trail mixes.
Typically, trail mixes are high in calories and need to be portioned out. However, the best way to avoid portioning and all those calories is to simply make your own trial mix! My own favorite snack is a trail mix with raw almonds and dark chocolate mix. Be creative! Add your own favorite nuts like cashews, walnuts or almonds with dark chocolate chips. If you want a saltier mix, add dry roasted peanuts! Other fun ingredients you could add (in moderation) to your homemade trail mix are banana chips, dried cranberries, dried cherries, unsalted pistachios and sunflower seeds.
If you want to add some sugar into the kids’ trail mixes, make a mix with mini marshmallows, chocolate chips, pretzels, and cracker bits! Adding popcorn (caramel flavored, too) is always a great option, the kids will love a different texture in the mix.
My favorite place for purchasing raw nuts is Trader Joe’s, but if you have a Wegmans around you, they have a nuts and chocolate station where you can make your own trail mix with whatever ingredients you choose!
You can store trail mix in a mason jar on the counter for the family to access whenever they want! For on the go, just portion out the trail mix into sandwich bags. You can also put out trail mix if friends are coming over to snack on! They are a great alternative to candy.
