Let’s face it, the internet can be a really scary place. Between strangers, viruses, and no limit on information, it’s a never-ending cycle for concerned parents. While there are no obvious, quick-fix solutions, there are things we can do to help us breathe a little easier. Here are our top tips that will help you keep your kids safe online.
Be Involved in Screen Time
It’s much harder to keep an eye on your kiddos if you have no idea what they’re doing. Keep laptops, computers, and iPads in central locations. This way it’s a lot easier to engage with them and be able to ask questions and keep them out of trouble.
Education is Key
If your kiddos are old enough to participate in social media, privacy settings are a must. Educate yourself on how to set privacy settings, what those settings mean, and what is right for your family. Since each social media platform varies, we’ve outlined how to access those settings to make it a little easier.
- Twitter: The default setting is public. However, you can go into the Settings area and select “Private” to make the account private and accessible only to friends and family.
- Facebook: There are different levels of privacy, but you can go under Edit Profile and choose Privacy Settings. Here, you select specific settings, limiting who can see your child’s profile.
- Video Chat: If your child is using video chat technology, make sure it is not on a public site. Keep chats limited to friends you both know your kids have real relationships with.
Access Their Accounts
If your kiddos are allowed to use social media, make sure you communicate their limits. Depending on how old they are, collecting their passwords is a great way to start. If you believe this is important then make sure your children know you’re not backing down. You can even have them put their passwords into sealed envelopes with the agreement that only in emergencies or if you suspect your child of inappropriate behaviors online would the passwords be accessed. Being able to check in on your kiddos are seeing what they’re up to will help you keep your kids safe online.
It’s no surprise that releasing your kiddos into the tech world can be nerve-wracking. But with a little preparation and education, it’s not as scary as it seems! Since technology can’t be ignored in our current days and times, we have to let go, little by little. What are some of your favorite tips to keep your kids safe online? Leave your comments below!
