Featured on the November list for School Library Journal, Mustaches for Maddie is an inspirational story for all ages. Based on a true story, this novel follows Maddie, an outgoing twelve-year-old girl. What sets her apart is a pocket full of fake mustaches in her pocket. She’s ready to make people laugh, in any situation, capturing a smile from just about anyone. Maddie is then suddenly diagnosed with a brain tumor, craniopharyngoima. Any childhood health scare can turn a family’s world upside down in an instant, but Maddie doesn’t waver. This story is about innocence, spunk, and most importantly, Maddie’s heart of gold. Here are some reasons why we think this book belongs on bookshelves across the country!
Balance Between Light and Dark
The best books have a little bit of everything. A little humor, a little heart, and of course a little sadness, too. The writing in this book is an incredible balance between fun and seriousness. The topics discussed are pretty heavy, but the writing gets the point across without bringing you down. Older kids can breeze through this book while understanding Maddie’s struggles and perspective, but still let out a giggle or smile throughout the pages. People of all ages, kids to adults, will enjoy this read for its humor and laughs, but will also leave the reader in deep thought. A book that can entertain and ask you to look further is always a win in my book!
Relatable For the Whole Family
I loved to read books as a child, and I even love to read them as an adult! Unfortunately, there are very few books that we can experience with our kiddos, and still be able to enjoy. One of the best things this book is the ability to feel connected to the characters, as an adult or child. Throughout the book, she has a huge heart but deeply struggles with some choices she has to make, like most of us do. She may be average, but she’s incredibly easy to understand and feel empathetic towards. She may be quirky and believe in deadly monsters, but there’s a little bit of her in everyone, and that’s really easy to connect with.
Inspiration On Every Page
Maddie deals with struggles that we all go through. She doesn’t sacrifice herself for the sake of popularity, but she still does yearn for Cassie’s approval. Cassie is the IT girl, head of the popular crowd, and has a big part of the school play. Although Maddie doesn’t connect with Cassie, she tries out for the role of Juliet. This only drives a wedge further between the two, which leads to additional issues. However, her family learns shortly after that Maddie has developed a brain tumor. Maddie has to learn to deal with her illness, and also Cassie at school. She learns to stand up for herself and tells a truly moving story of courage at such a young age. There’s so much inspiration on every page about believing in yourself and pushing through. No matter what’s in her way, Maddie teaches us all to be courageous and brave.
Mustaches for Maddie is a truly heartwarming story, that will change your perspective on a lot of trials in life. Whether your kiddos didn’t make the basketball team, you didn’t get that promotion you deserve, or you’re just looking for a little inspiration, look no further. Maddie shows us all how to deal with life and all it offers, and the answer might be as simple as pulling a mustache out of your pocket. This book is a must-read, and I hope you are able to fall in love with it, just like I did.
