With school out for the summer, your kiddos have plenty of free time! So how do you get them to get outside and get active? There may not be one simple solution, but there are tons of ways to get your family to exercise. Here are a few ways to keep the whole family up and going!
1. Be an example.
As a parent, you know your kiddos are ALWAYS watching! You know the old saying, turn a negative into a positive. Some kiddos will always see working out as a chore and won’t see the point in why it helps them stay healthy. So, if they see you working out on a daily basis, maybe they’ll want to join in, too! There are plenty of classes at gyms and recreation centers that allow children and parents to train together.
2. Give them a reason.
Whether you make it a fun game or give them a prize at the end, setting goals is a great way to keep them interested. For instance, the first to do twenty push-ups wins! The first one to reach the finish line gets the pick out the movie for family movie night. Small or big, prizes are a great incentive for kids to stay active. Be sure to do this every so often, or your child will begin to go through the motions just to receive a prize.
3. Get a group.
Try to organize the kids on your street or local interest groups and have them get active together! This is a great way for you to get to know the families in your area! It’s always so much more fun when you’re with your friends. They serve not only as comfort but also as an inspiration to complete the workout. You can create a mini-marathon or relay race; the more the better!
Getting your family to exercise may not happen overnight, but as long as you’re trying, that’s all that matters! Whether you’re taking a walk in the park, swimming at the pool, or just playing tag outside, summer is the best time to get in shape.
