As we approach another school year, It’s a great time to figure out new ways to invest your time in your children’s education. Parent’s everywhere should take an active approach when it comes to their kiddo’s education. There’s no doubt that a ‘teamwork’ mentality is a huge advantage for developing kiddos! And let’s be honest, we all want our kiddos to grow up to be the best they can be. Here are some tips to help your children succeed in the 2018 school year.
Set Goals
Sit down with your family and have your kiddos write down a few goals for this school year. Whether their goals are grades related, sports related, or waking up on time, write them down. Writing down each goal helps them to visualize and really narrow down whats important to them. Make sure to post this in a spot they’ll be able to see every single day, which serves as a constant reminder for them.
Develop a Plan of Action
Goals are useless unless we make a plan to reach them! Sit down with your kiddos to discuss how they can reach them in a reasonable amount of time. Break it down by day, week, month, etc. It starts with the little things every day but that doesn’t mean large steps aren’t important, too. Write down your plan of action and make sure you check weekly on the progress.
Organization
It’s no surprise that better organization leads to higher levels of academic achievement. Make a storage system for weekly assignments, test schedules, etc. At the beginning of the week organize the papers your kiddos come home with. Make sure to explain the organization to your kiddos so they know where to find the papers they may need. If possible, set this up in an area that includes a designated study area. Having a separate space specifically for studying is a great tool for kiddos.
Communication
The importance of communication between parents and teachers is huge. If possible, make every attempt to meet your child’s teacher and open that line of communication. Get involved in school activities. Most schools offer online information regarding homework, student progress, school happenings, and so forth. Log on frequently and make sure you keep up with your kiddos as much as you possibly can!
Celebrate Success
As much time you spend focusing on the negatives, don’t forget to celebrate the victories, too! Even the smallest success is cause for celebration. If your kiddos get a B on a test, recognize that. If their grade goes from a D to a C, show them that you’re proud of their efforts. It’s important to show encouragement when it’s due.
Play to Their Strengths
I truly believe every child excels in something. If you were the lead cheerleader on your high school squad, don’t take offense if your daughter has no interest in cheering. Encourage her in the activities that interest her. Our kiddos don’t have to live the lives we do but make sure they put their effort forth some activity!
Daily Family Time
Sure, our hectic schedules can get in the way, but nothing will strengthen the bond you share with your children like spending quality time together. Turn off the TV and go for a walk. Insist that every member of the family enjoy dinner together a few times a week. Let your children know they matter by spending time with them.
The beginning of the school year can seem like a hectic time but it doesn’t have to be. All your kiddos need is some love, encouragement, and support to get them through the 2018 school year. What are some of your favorite tips to help your children succeed? Leave your comments below!
