As busy as our daily schedules are, there’s no shame in hiring some extra help. In between endless sporting events, activities, and homework… it’s a lot. An afternoon babysitter or part-time nanny could be a huge help to you and give you more quality time to spend with your kiddos. As perfect as a solution a babysitter might be, it’s important to know what you’re getting yourself into. Hiring a babysitter can be a long and overwhelming process and you want to make sure you do it right. Here are some tips for hiring a babysitter for your family.
DO Use Care.com or Sittercity.com
These sites are reputable and trustworthy for childcare. Not only can you see photos and online background checks, there are tons of other resources on these websites. You can see hourly rates, experience, and certifications. It’s a one-stop-shop for all of your childcare needs!
DON’T Hire Off of Craigslist
It may not sound like a terrible idea, but do not post an ad for a babysitter on Craigslist. Anyone can reply to you on Craigslist. This is not a reputable site and you could put yourself in danger meeting someone on this website!
DO Take Advantage of Meetings/Interviews
The initial interview should be held in a public place like a park or a cafe, for your safety and the candidate’s safety. If you like the person you interview, then have another meeting, this can be at your house, to get your kiddos better acquainted with who will be taking care of them while you’re away.
DO Have Expectations and Rules
Don’t feel bad letting your sitter know what you expect of them. Do you allow cell phones or electronics? Will there be times that hours will go late? Will you have them running errands or cooking? What are your children’s bedtimes? This is important information for the sitter to know so that they can keep things in order.
DO Ask a friend
Perhaps you have a few friends who also have children that require a babysitter. Call them and see if you can exchange babysitting with them. You can offer to take her children one day/evening in exchange for her watching your kids. Another thought is to ask your friends who they use for a babysitter. Strong references are always your best bet!
Hiring a babysitter can be great for the entire family. Your kiddos can get more one-on-one time with you and you can get a little more peace of mind. Just make sure you trust the process and take your time. What are some of your go-to tips for hiring a babysitter? Leave your comments below!
